‘ACTION MAN’ – THE NEW NICKNAME FOR LOCAL BUSINESS COACH
25 / Mar / 2010
‘ACTION MAN’ – THE NEW NICKNAME FOR LOCAL BUSINESS COACH

A Staffordshire based business coach has been labelled ‘Action Man’ by his fellow coaches after guiding 30 businesses to greater success over the past year.

ActionCOACH’s Ian Nicklin was judged to be one of the best performing 14 coaches in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, for his commitment to helping his clients grow their businesses.

Ian and his fellow winners, who fought off competition from the 300 other coaches in the EMEA region, each received an Action Man award for their achievements.

Ian Nicklin said: “It was a great honour to receive this award in front of all my fellow coaches and be internationally recognised for my achievements.

“It has given me even more determination to carry on producing fantastic results for my clients.”

Ian specialises in helping business owners focus on the strategic development of their business, rather than day-to-day administration, and holding them accountable to the commitments they make in weekly sessions.

Graham Doyle is Managing Director of D2 Network Associates, and worked with Ian for nine months last year to develop his business.

He said: “Ian encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone as often as possible and this gave me greater confidence which has been a huge help achieving real results in the business.

“The service paid for itself within the first three months through the implementation of strategies to increase profit margins and make efficiency improvements.”

The recession has encouraged more businesses to follow D2NA’s lead and seek out Ian’s help. As a result, turnover is up 300% in the first quarter of 2010, and the firm has recruited three new members of staff, including a business development manager.

ActionCOACH is the world’s number one business and executive coaching firm, with more than 1000 offices in 26 countries.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES FLOCKING TO BLUETOOTH MARKETING GURUS

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES FLOCKING TO BLUETOOTH MARKETING GURUS
An innovative marketing company is making strides into the further education sector after signing up several colleges and universities.
TextBlue has teamed up with Guildford College to use Bluetooth technology in the library to support student communications and broadcast information about events.
And teachers from several colleges around the country, including Mid Kent College and Portsmouth Highbury College, are looking to use the devices to deliver homework assignments to students while they are in the classroom.
TextBlue MD Quinton Watton-Smith said: “Bluetooth technology has been used by various companies and organisations to contact potential customers and members of the public, but it hasn’t yet been utilised fully in the education sector.
“Our devices can broadcast anything, from ringtones and wallpapers to videos, to any Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone within 100m.
“We believe it can be used to engage with students and young people in a new way, as has been shown by the University of Kent.”
The partnerships have been organised in conjunction with the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), a Government-funded agency which provides support for e-learning across the post-16 sector.
Adam Blackwood is E-Advisor Teaching and Learning at JISC’s Regional Support Centre in the South East.
He said: “Colleges and universities are attracted to the Bluetooth technology because it enhances student communications.
“We have encouraged colleges and other educational organisations to examine the technology because of its versatility.
“It enables them to inform and enhance the student learning experience, as well as advertising special events and open days.”
The technology is also in use at Southgate College, and The University of Northampton.

MORE TEENAGERS TO BENEFIT FROM EXPANSION OF ONE-TO-ONE TUITION PROVIDER

MORE TEENAGERS TO BENEFIT FROM EXPANSION OF ONE-TO-ONE TUITION PROVIDER
A thriving one-to-one tuition provider has moved to new premises after the success of their programmes caused them to out-grow their previous base.
A-Star Tutoring has switched their headquarters to the Lyme Vale Business Park in Newcastle-under-Lyme, from their old home in Stoke town centre.
Bosses Abdul Rahim and Mohammed Khan believe the move was necessary due to the demand for additional tuition from parents and students in North Staffordshire schools, particularly from Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Director Mohammed Khan said: “Demand for our services – especially in English and Maths tuition – has grown massively in the past couple of years.
“Before we moved, we were running three after- school sessions a day, employing 10 tutors and helping around 100 students per week improve their GCSE results.
“Our new premises are three times bigger than our old home, meaning we can take on five more tutors and expand our provision by another 300 students.”
A-Star Tutoring has helped 3000 students since opening their doors in 2003. They specialise in tailored one-to-one tuition programmes for children aged 6-18 in Maths, English, Science and ICT.
Attainment of GCSEs (Grade A- C) in schools in the Stoke-on-Trent area is much lower than in the rest of the UK.

Less than 40% of Stoke-on-Trent teenagers attained five GCSEs (Grade A-C) in 2009 – almost 10% lower than the national average.

NEW SERVICE SHOUTS EMERGENCY DETAILS WHEN YOU CAN’T

NEW SERVICE SHOUTS EMERGENCY DETAILS WHEN YOU CAN’T

A ground-breaking new online service is set to provide a lifeline for people taken ill or involved in an accident while abroad.

The SOSMyWorld website (http://www.sosmyworld.com) is a secure, password protected resource, which allows users to store donor information, next of kin contact details, any important medical conditions, and information on medical and travel insurance policies.

The amount and type of information stored on the site is completely at the user’s discretion, but could be accessed, anywhere in the world, within seconds by inputting the unique username and password details printed on the SOSMyWorld products.

It is the brainchild of Managing Director David Hill, who recognized the need for SOSMyWorld while working in the travel industry – specifically in summer and winter sports-related businesses.

He said: “I travelled extensively on business while working in the travel sector, and continue to do so now.

“I recognised the main problem if you have an accident, or just need help, is information – who do you need to be contacted? Do you have any conditions which could affect treatment given? What are your insurance details?

“SOSMyWorld gives you the possibility to load this information, and shout it out if you can’t. The emergency services may need to find your details fast.

“It could save vital seconds in countries like the USA, which will only treat people they know have valid medical insurance.

“And if you’re incapacitated, it will also give the police next of kin details for the person you want them to contact, instead of contacting whoever they can find – which in itself can be a very lengthy process.”

SOSMyWorld is also an important resource for all companies which feel a corporate responsibility to their employees, whether they travel on business or not.

David Hill said: “Companies have a duty of care for any employee they send overseas or otherwise, and using SOSMyWorld could be the difference between them receiving vital medical treatment or not.”

A wide range of products, including wrist bands, key rings, and iPhone applications, featuring unique log-in details are now available. The company has also developed the range to suit executive travellers, backpackers, and fans of outdoor pursuits.

MANAGEMENT BUYOUT LEADS TO MAJOR CHANGES FOR BUSINESS DATA SUPPLIER

MANAGEMENT BUYOUT LEADS TO MAJOR CHANGES FOR BUSINESS DATA SUPPLIER

Bosses at global business information provider CoCredo are making strategic changes to double turnover year-on-year after completing a management buyout.

Directors Dan Hancocks and Richard Hogarth have taken control of the company - formerly known as Wyse Assist - and are now hoping to rapidly grow the firm, which specialises in credit checking and supplying detailed company reports and marketing information.

The process has already begun, with the launch of two new services, with a third to be launched at the beginning of 2010.

Dan Hancocks said: "Our 'New Start Data' service allows companies to receive a daily list of companies established in their area in the previous 24 hours.

"Alongside this we have launched the 'XML Delivery' facility, which enables our clients to have their data delivered via an electronic feed. This will help people who don't have time to do credit checks manually.

"And we are also looking to offer a third new service - a reporting facility to give full personal details on consumers - in Quarter One."

Alongside the new services, an improved website is planned, the company is looking to move to new premises in the first quarter of 2010, and they are looking to recruit more staff to meet increased demand for their services.

Richard Hogarth said: "The management buyout has allowed us to offer greater flexibility to our clients, while retaining the capabilities associated with our long-standing links with data providers.

"These connections means we can credit check any company in the world using data which is updated in real time, 500000 times a day.
“And our Premium Monitoring service ensures any changes to company reports are proactively emailed to clients on a daily basis.”

PR FIRM TO QUIZ FAMOUS ENTREPRENEURS ON APPROACH TO MARKETING
A pioneering PR firm is to provide budding entrepreneurs with insights on marketing and promotion from big-name business leaders.
Stoke-on-Trent based Richard Swancott Associates launches a series of monthly podcasts on January 22nd, with an interview with real-life Slumdog Millionaire (as labelled by The Sun) and local entrepreneur Mo Chaudry.
The series will develop through interviews with leading lights of the business world, giving aspring Alan Sugars tips straight from the minds of successful moguls.
The aim of the project is to build up a comprehensive picture of strategies that have proved effective at the highest levels, as well as being a source of inspiration for small business owners. Bosses believe they are the only PR firm in Staffordshire to use podcasting in this way.
Owner Richard Swancott said: “We aim to provide a resource that people looking to build their businesses can tap into.
“Whether you’re talking about one of the Dragons like Duncan Bannatyne, the chairman of a football club or anybody else who’s considered a business chief, PR has played a role in their success.
“We want to find out exactly what worked for them, the tricks they used, and pass that knowledge on to the next generation of entrepreneurs.”
Podcasts will be available at the company’s website (www.richardswancottassociates.co.uk), blog (http://prstokeontrent.wordpress.com) and via iTunes.

OCTEMPO:RM SPEAKS OH2’s LANGUAGE WHEN IT COMES TO CHASING PAYMENTS

OCTEMPO:RM SPEAKS OH2’s LANGUAGE WHEN IT COMES TO CHASING PAYMENTS

A translations business is getting the help they need to become established in the UK from a unique cash flow management specialist, which can chase invoice payments in up to 27 different languages.

OH2 International (www.oh2international.co.uk), which has offices in Madrid and Barcelona, and has recently opened its UK headquarters in Keele, Staffordshire, specialises in all types of translations, including brochures, websites and even Sat Nav systems. They have clients across Europe.
This means alongside the typical concerns associated with building a new business, like finding new customers and getting paid on time, OH2 also have to contend with chasing payments from foreign companies.
The collaboration with Warrington-based Octempo:RM has reduced those concerns, because they handle the whole order to cash cycle on OH2’s behalf – including conversing with clients in Spanish, Portuguese, German and even Catalan.
OH2’s Managing Director John Bendel said: “Joining forces with Octempo:RM has enabled me to focus on bringing in business, as I can pass everything over to them as soon as the order has been confirmed.
“As a result we are starting to set strong foundations in the UK, have opened an office in Germany, and are looking to open another in Poland – which Octempo will be able to help me with as they can also chase payments in Polish.”
Octempo:RM have been offering this service for six months. Octempo’s directors claim companies will increasingly turn to speaking their customer’s language, because it helps to build rapport and handle their enquiries more efficiently.
It is also a very important factor for companies which are looking to develop international trade links.
Octempo:RM Managing Director Julian Llewellyn said: “We typically use nationals of the relevant country to handle all communications with our client’s customers.
“This is a key factor because they understand the culture of their country, rather than just speaking the language.
“In some countries this is very important – in Germany, for example, you have to be very direct, but by contrast, small talk is expected when dealing with Spanish companies.
“Getting that wrong could make it harder to get the outstanding invoice paid quickly and hold on to that customer.”

INNOVATIVE PR FIRM IN STAFFORDSHIRE LAUNCHES UNIQUE COACHING PROGRAMME

INNOVATIVE PR FIRM IN STAFFORDSHIRE LAUNCHES UNIQUE COACHING PROGRAMME

A leading PR company in Staffordshire has launched a unique new course to turn small businesses into mini PR machines.

Stoke-on-Trent PR firm Richard Swancott Associates have developed the programme, the first of its kind in the UK, to take participants through planning and implementing a PR campaign.

Guests will receive guidance on writing newsworthy press releases, developing a long-term PR strategy which includes events and award applications, and hear from industry experts on what makes a good story.

The year-long programme, made up of 12 monthly two-hour sessions, will also feature advice on using social networking sites and blogs to bring in business.

Owner Richard Swancott said: “Lots of PR firms in Staffordshire, including us, run workshops and we believe they are very good at getting people fired up and giving them ideas.

“However, having left the workshop, people rarely put into practice what they’ve learned, because they get side-tracked by what they consider to be more pressing issues.

“We want to put a stop to that by keeping them focussed and giving them the chance to regularly brainstorm ideas, solve PR problems and hear from the experts about what they should focus on.

“There is nothing like this on the market, because most people are left to their own devices – we want to help them ensure PR makes a real difference to their businesses.”

The course, which costs £500 + VAT, starts on February 22nd 2010 (12-2), at the Lymedale Business Centre in Newcastle.

PIONEERING COLLABORATION BETWEEN COLLEGE AND DHL TO BE EXPANDED

PIONEERING COLLABORATION BETWEEN COLLEGE AND DHL TO BE EXPANDED
A unique partnership designed to improve basic skills and provide NVQ qualifications to scores of DHL employees is to be expanded.
Stoke-on-Trent College joined forces with DHL and the USDAW trade union in October 2007 to deliver training in literacy and numeracy, and a range of vocational qualifications including warehousing and storage operations, driving goods vehicles, and environmental waste management.
It was the first time the College had collaborated with an employer and a trade union on a project like this. And it has been so successful – over 150 qualifications have been attained – that it will be extended in the New Year.
DHL Systems Manager Anthony Snape said: “We have trained more than 20% of the workforce in the past two years and will soon be offering NVQs in IT, and rolling it out to our partners in security and catering.
“The secret of the success is the commitment of all parties, and the College’s flexibility in providing a solution tailored to our requirements.
“The College were also able to tap into various funding streams which brought the costs down significantly. It’s great that we can make such a contribution to our local area.”
Training was delivered at the Sainsbury’s Distribution Centre in Sideway, which is operated by DHL, and used staff and materials provided by the College.
Such was DHL’s commitment to the programme, they won Employer of the Year at the College’s Celebrating Success Awards.
Their Warehouse Colleague John Goodwin – who has gathered five qualifications in a year – also won Employee of the Year, while Dave Barber, James Burns and Alan Jones all picked up Learner Rep of the Year Awards through USDAW.
Contract Manager Sue Rigby said: “This has proved to be a very successful collaboration, and upskilling employees has helped DHL perform well through the recession and improve their staff retention rates.
“And on the back of it we have used the DHL/Sainsbury’s template to introduce union-led learning activities to Royal Mail, BT and Argos Distribution.”
Further information on the services provided to employers by the College can be found at www.stokecollege.ac.uk/employer.
